July Newsletter

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (June 15, 2011) – Ohio Agriculture Director James Zehringer honored four Ohio Quality Wines as Director’s Choice recipients at an event held at the Statehouse for retailers, distributors, restaurateurs and winery owners.

More than 25 wines were evaluated by a panel of judges, on behalf of Director Zehringer, for the highly coveted award. The 2011 award recipients are:

* White Wine (tie):

2010 Signature Series Golden Bunches Dry Riesling
Ferrante Winery of Geneva, Ohio

Reflections of Lake Erie
Old Firehouse Winery of Geneva, Ohio

* Red Wine:

2010 Cabernet Franc
Valley Vineyards of Morrow, Ohio

* Specialty Wine:

Sweet Genevieve Ice Wine
Laurello Vineyards of Geneva, Ohio

All of the Director’s Choice award recipients have already received the Ohio Quality Wine award designation. It was created in 2007 by the Ohio Grape Industries Committee and is assigned to wines made from at least 90 percent Ohio-grown grapes. These wines must also achieve at least 15 of 20 points on a sensory evaluation and pass a chemical analysis before receiving the quality seal. European vinifera and French American hybrid grapes may be used to make all wine styles, and Labrusca (native grapes) may be used to make fortified wines.

By focusing on wines made from Ohio grapes, the Ohio Quality Wine program will spur the expansion and renovation of Ohio’s vineyards to meet the needs of Ohio winemakers. The program provides four judgings per year to include all possible wine releases. Chemical analysis also sets this quality program apart from others by identifying flaws that can be missed when only sensory testing is used.

The Ohio Grape Industries Committee is housed at the Ohio Department of Agriculture and provides wineries a means to market their top-quality wines against well-known California and European wines. To learn more about the program or for a complete list of Ohio Quality Wines, visit www.tasteohiowines.com.

Ohio’s grape and wine production is an integral component of Ohio’s agriculture industry. It contributes nearly a half billion dollars to Ohio’s economy and accounts for more than 4,100 full-time jobs.

Recipe of the Month

Grilled Curried Jumbo Shrimp

1 1/2 pounds jumbo (or extra large) shrimp
4 cloves of garlic
2 small red chilies, chopped
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup finely chopped cilantro
1 teaspoon curry paste or powder
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
                                                                                                         1 bottle of Ferrante's Grand River Valley Signature Series Gewurztraminer

Clean and devein the shrimp, leaving the shell on. In a mini food processor, process the garlic and chiles to a coarse paste. Add the sugar and salt and blend to a finer paste.

Stir in the cilantro, curry, and oil. Gently pull open the shell of each shrimp. Divide the paste evenly and push some paste down the back of each shrimp where the vein was and under the shell a bit. Close the shell back up around the shrimp. Let marinate covered in the refrigerator up to 4 hours.

Preheat grill or broiler. Grill the shrimp over a medium-hot fire, until the shells are charred on one side and the shrimp is cooked halfway through, about 3 minutes. Turn and grill the other side.

Served on a bed of mixed greens for a refreshing summertime salad.

Pour a glass of Ferrante’s Award Winning Grand River Valley Gewurztraminer and enjoy!

Serves 4.

Vineyard Updates

     We currently are shoot positioning all Vinifera (Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Gris etc) into catch wires.  We will be pulling leaves with our Gregore Leaf Puller to remove leaves around the fruit zone to let the sun penetrate the fruiting area for increased sun exposure.  Shoot growth looks normal at this time.  Overall, vine growth is good.

     We recently planted 6 new acres of vineyards; 2 acres of Riesling, 1 ½ acres of Pinot Gris and Cabernet Franc, and 1 acre of Pinot Noir.

     Next week, we will be putting in the trellises starting with wood and metal posts, end posts, wires and staking roads.
