June News

Ohio’s Director of Agriculture visits Ferrante Winery & Ristorante

Jim Zehringer, Director of Agriculture with the Ohio Department of Agriculture visited Ferrante Winery & Ristorante in the Grand River Valley Appellation on Tuesday May 10th 2011 after touring some of Lake County’s Finest Nurseries.  The agriculture and food industry is the number one industry in Ohio, adding more than $98 billion to the economy each year.  With such a prevalent industry, the recent visit to the Grand River Valley Appellation comes as little shock to most.

While visiting one of Ohio’s largest family owned wineries, Zehringer got to experience the latest in innovation occurring at Ferrante Winery & Ristorante.   Winemaker Nicholas Ferrante personally toured Zehringer through his state-of-the-art wine making facility and offering Zehringer the first glimpse of Ferrante’s newest wine in progress.  The GRV 1011 is Ferrante’s latest blend of innovation and pure wine making talent.  This dry red vinifera is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, & Pinot Noir.  This is a continuous blend in which half of the wine will be bottled & the remaining one-half will be re-blended with the new 2012 vintage.  This process will be repeated each year. This blend is aged in a 520 gallon French Oval Barrel and will aid in the rich consistency & complexity to the final product once released.

Jim Zehringer was appointed by John Kasich in January of 2011 and is already making huge strides to continue the advancements of the Agricultural industry in Ohio.  The Ferrante family is truly honored to have shared their passion for viticulture and enology with Mr. Jim Zehringer.

In the future, Nicholas will also be sharing his agricultural knowledge with those of the ODA Business Roundtable a committee of business leaders that meet once a month.  This great achievement will help increase a common understanding of what great accomplishments occur in the Grand River Valley Appellation.

June is "Ohio Wine Month" this is designated by State Legislature to promote the sale of quality Ohio Wines.  Help us celebrate Ohio Wine Month with Ohio’s premier wines at an event which will take place on Tuesday, June 14 from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. in Columbus at the State House in the Museum Gallery.

The Ohio Wine Month Celebration event will feature Ohio Quality Wine designees, as well as gold medal award-winners from the 2011 Ohio Wine Competition.

Vineyard Update

Currently our vineyard staff is suckering.  Suckering is the removal of new shoots at the base of the vine.  If these were left alone, it would take away nutrients from the existing vine.  If a vine needs a new trunk a few suckers are left to be trained onto new trunks.

With such wet weather the vineyard conditions are very damp.  The months of April and May have been the wettest the vineyards have ever seen.  Rain affects the take away of dirt plowed up near the rootstock of the vines for winter protection.

With the weather beginning to warm up, the new shoots and grape clusters aare growing well.  The vineyards avoided frost damage with late bud break.
