Vineyard Update

Delightfully warm weather, not so great for Ferrante’s grapes

The unseasonably warmer temperatures might wash away those winter blues, but the wine growers of the Grand River Valley fear the worst for their grapes.   “As a vintner I find these early warming temperatures to be extremely challenging.  We are at the mercy of Mother Nature, and have an increase chance of losing crop,” explains Nicholas Ferrante.

With temperature reaching 70 degrees or higher and night time temperatures around 50 degrees, there is an increased chance of early bud break for grapes.  The Lambrusca style grapes will be the first to bud, followed by the Vinifera grapes.  Ferrante’s Lambrusca style grapes are already beginning to swell and with warmer temperatures in the future the increased risk of further maturation is high.

Being that the Grand River Valley Appellation is a cool climate growing region the wineries deal with the threat of frost every Spring.  Typically, the threat is high up until the end of May.  There are some strategies that are being implemented and others that are simply theories.

Ferrante Winery relies on their Wind Machines when the threat of frost is high.  These Wind Machines can save 80% of a crop that we might have lost otherwise.  The air temperatures are coldest between 1am and sunrise, so the potential for frost is then highest.  The Wind Machines will circulate the air forcing the warmer air to surround the buds.  This season, the combination of warmer ground temperatures and the force from the Wind Machines will protect the buds or grapes as best possible.  There is no guarantee with the Wind Machines, but there is a better chance of crop survival with them.

Recent studies have discussed the use of soy bean oil to help protect the grapes during unseasonably warmer winter temperatures.  Ferrante winery has experimented with this concept on their French-American hybrid, Vidal Blanc.  There is no scientific proof that the use of soy bean oil will insure a healthy crop, but the hope is still high.

The 2012 year is creating an added stress on the Wine Growers of the Grand River Valley Appellation, but if the warmer weather continues and the threat of frost remains just a threat, we will have an exceptional crop.  Possibly the best growing season ever!

*Note with increasingly warmer temperatures the increase risk for pest and insects also becomes greater.  The Grape Flea Beetle has been around for years, but they have already been seen in some Kingsville vineyards.  These little pests feed on the swollen grape buds and can wipe out an entire vineyard.
